PokeRogue APK is a browser-based Roguelite based on the Pokémon battle engine. This game was developed from the ground up using the Phaser3 2D game framework. A roguelite is a game where you play temporary sessions or 'runs' rather than a single playthrough, although there are many unlockables that carry over to the next run. To simplify the game, there is no overworld, and everything takes place within the battle engine.
What is PokeRogue APK?
PokeRogue APK is a fan-made game heavily inspired by roguelikes. A roguelike involves players battling enemies and collecting loot in procedurally generated dungeons. In the event of death, the game will send you back to the beginning, but with persistent upgrades that gradually make future runs easier.
PokeRogue captures this essence perfectly, transforming it into the familiar world of Pokémon. You'll encounter a wide variety of Pokémon from all nine generations, and engage in challenging battles against trainers and bosses. What's the key twist? You will keep yourself on your toes with randomized layouts and enemies on each run.
Gameplay
PokeRogue APK is a game combines Pokemon with a genre known as a "roguelite." Roguelites are known for their difficulty and permadeath, where your character dies and you have to start the game from scratch. While PokeRogue doesn't exactly follow the permadeath aspect, it does have some features that make each playthrough unique and challenging.
The core of PokeRogue is its turn-based battling system that Pokemon fans are familiar with. A strategic battle awaits you as you encounter wild Pokemon and capture them to build your team. Each playthrough presents a unique world to explore, but the rogue-lite twist comes in the form of procedurally generated maps.
Throughout the game, you'll face challenging decisions that will enhance your team's power but also make things more difficult. Playing with this risk-reward system keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting, forcing you to constantly adapt your strategies.
How to Play PokeRogue
Let's begin at the beginning. The first step is to choose your team. All the starters from Generation 1-9 are available to you, rendered in beautiful animated sprites as if Pokemon stopped in 2004. This is another Gen 3 hack, but I'm fine with that, as I have fond memories of those games.
Animated sprites for each Pokemon released since then have been meticulously created and beautiful. You can have a maximum of ten starters in your starting party, and each of them is worth three points. So, we'll start with three starters. However, every Pokemon you catch on your run becomes available for selection on your next run. Did you catch a Zubat? You can use it next time for two points. Did you catch a Raichu? Next time around, you'll have to pay four points for Pikachu.
A battle is like a level. You have cleared a floor after winning ten battles. This is the only time your team will get fully healed for free. You can spend your meager earnings between battles on Potions, Revives, and other items, as well as pick one freebie to progress.
PokeRogue cleverly implements items from many Pokemon games to create a variety of exciting interactions. As a result of Pokemon Go's lures, you're more likely to encounter double battles, which offer twice the experience as encountering a single Pokemon. Despite each floor having a level cap (which can only be exceeded using Rare Candies, another handy item), you'll want to get close to it to succeed in the difficult trainer battles.
